John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, took office in 1960. He was America's first Catholic president. Upon entering office, Kennedy set out to implement a legislative agenda that became known as the New Frontier. He hoped to increase aide to education, provide health insurance for the elderly, and create a Department of Urban Affairs. This was no easy task.
